Armed with Spiritual Power

This week we had to prepare a short lesson talking about the importance of spirituality.  I believe that strengthening our spirituality helps establish a resilient family.  It arms us with power to fight the adversary.  I decided to include the lesson that I created to teach my own children about this important topic.  This lesson was taken from Elder Oaks book titles Spirituality:  In the Pure in Heart, chapter 7.  I've enclosed it below.  I hope that we can all strive for spiritual things in our lives, that we can seek for the "change in heart" a change for the better like Alma the Younger.

Object Lesson: 

Have children look through a toilet paper tube and say things that they see  (a messy room, zit on her nose, messy hair, etc…)  Explain that many times we see things through a tunnel and can only see things as they are.  Now have everyone look through a poptab.  These are our spiritual eyes and we see people the way our Heavenly Father sees them.  Through our spiritual eyes we can also be spiritually intune to what Heavenly Father wants us to do and become. 

Scripture Memorization:

2 Nephi 9:39-the last line-Spiritually-minded is life eternal (S.M.I.L.E.)

Discuss what that means.  Being spiritually minded makes us happy and makes us SMILE.

Lesson:

We can think of spiritual things by hearts.  The scriptures give us many great examples:   (discuss each of these examles)

·         “God gave [Saul] another heart”  1 Samuel 10:9

·         Nephi was grieved because of the “hardness of their hearts.”  1 Nephi 15:4

·         Paul described the spiritually insensitive by saying, “But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.”  2 Corinthians 3:15

·         Alma the younger had a change of heart.  Alma 5:7, Alma 5:13-14 You can also play the song “His Image in your Countenance”  https://youtu.be/BHLoh5LoiJ4

·         Helaman declares that “faith and repentance bringeth a change of heart.”  (Helaman 15:7)

·         The story of Martha and Mary.  Luke 10:38-42. “This scripture reminds every Martha, male and female, that we should not be so occupied with what is routine and temporal that we fail to cherish those opportunities that are unique and spiritual.”  Show the picture of Martha and Mary in the gospel art book.

Discussion:

Discuss ways that we can become more spiritual in our own lives. 

Why is it so important to be “Spiritually Minded?”

How could being “Spiritually Minded” arm us with power?

Activity/Treat:Sugar Cookies-Have the children decorate them.  And tell them that we can all have a “change of heart”
